Dragon Boat Team
The G.W.S.A. Dragon Boat Team has been around for about 12 years. The Dragon Boat Festival traditionally takes place on Guelph Lake in the Grand River Conservation Authority during the first weekend in June. Dragon boats hold a minimum of 16 paddlers, a steer person and a drummer. There can be as many as 20 paddlers in the boat. There are 25 members on the team with the boat accommodating as many as 22 at a time. The heavy boats can be paddled across a 500 metre course in less than two and a half minutes.
The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association and Linamar Corp. sponsor our entry into the Annual Dragon Boat Festival. It costs $30.00 to join the Evergreen Senior Dragons. For that you get several practice/fitness sessions at a pool, practice sessions on the lake, a primary coloured t-shirt and hat, and hours of fun during the weekend of the festival.
It you are interesting in joining the Dragon Boat Team or just want more information, contact Chris Zamin, Seniors Recreation Program Co-ordinator at the Evergreen Centre, 519 823-1291 or Ted Pritchard, Retired Dragon Boat Captain, 519 826-6121.
